Ladders on Mardi Gras parade routes - cool or not cool?

It seems like at one time ladders were nice ways for parents to make sure their kids got a good view of Mardi Gras parades (and were safe from being stepped on). And the rule was that ladders had to be as many feet away from the curb as they were high.

But now, at so many of the big parades, there are virtual walls of ladders, and some of them come right up to the curb.

We all hate more rules (especially at Mardi Gras) - but do we need them when it comes to ladders?

They need to stay back, to let non-ladder people up front to actually *see* the parade. They should also not be allowed to be set up the day before a parade, and this counts laying them on the ground to mark your spot days in advance as well. I'd like to see garbage trucks run down the parade route every night at 2 or 3 am, and throw out all the ladders marking territory. Spot-claiming has become incredibly ridiculous over the last few years, moreso than all the ladders.

I think the ladders are a great idea, in theory, so the little ones can see the parade - however, I don't think it's a good idea to have them at the very front of the crowds because it seems they become more like a target for being hit hard with throws & having the ladders kicked over by people trying to get closer to the parades.

Growing up.... we didn't have ladders and I was able to see and enjoy parades just fine. I turned out alright! :)

I don't think rules are really necessary. There's always space somewhere nearby for you to get closer to the curbs
